Join this evening women's book club! And no, you don’t have to be a "bad girl" to join the group. This group will focus on books with female authors and unique female protagonists. In depth and honest opinions are encouraged. You don’t even have to finish the book to join in on the discussion. Indulgent beverages and desserts will be served.

Monday, October 14

6:00–8:00 pm

Facilitator: Andrea Azar

Uprooted from their family home in the Dominican Republic, the four Garcia sisters — Carla, Sandra, Yolanda, and Sofia — arrive in New York City in 1960 to find a life far different from the genteel existence of maids, manicures, and extended family they left behind. What they have lost — and what they find — is revealed in the fifteen interconnected stories that make up this exquisite novel from one of the premier novelists of our time. — Goodreads

We’re not all that BAD! Having won the F. Scott Fitzgerald and Hispanic Heritage Awards, Julia Alvarez received the National Medal of Arts Award in 2013 from President Barack Obama. Our October book, HOW THE GARCIA GIRLS LOST THEIR ACCENTS, is her first novel, authored from her own life to escape imprisonment when forced to flee from the Dominican Republic during the Trujillo years. WTTW American Masters presented a two hour program on 9/17 about her journeys and life and we encourage all members of our group to watch this very informative documentary. It not only summarizes her life and struggles but gives an encouraging look into the literary career of one of our most important Hispanic authors.  Hope to see you all at Womanspace, 6PM, on October 14.
